
Getting Your Wafer Heat Just Right
When you’re working with infrared lamps on a clean room bench, the goal is simple: get the heat exactly where it needs to go. You don’t want to waste power, and you definitely don’t want to mess up your environment. That’s why we use gold-coated reflectors. It keeps the infrared radiation hitting the wafer instead of just heating up the lamp housing for no reason.
Why gold?
Most people use aluminum reflectors, but here’s the thing—aluminum actually absorbs some of that IR spectrum. Gold is different. It’s incredibly reflective in the infrared range, which means it pushes the heat forward with a lot more punch. Every watt of electricity you put in actually does its job on the wafer surface. It’s just more efficient.
Less heat, less stress
When you’re picking out these lamps, you’re really looking at energy density. Because the gold coating is so effective, you can hit your target temperatures without cranking up the wattage. This is a huge win for your HVAC system. Your clean room stays cooler because the lamps aren’t bleeding heat into the air. It just makes the whole room feel less like an oven. We designed these to be a simple drop-in replacement for your current setup. But a quick heads-up: since they’re so much more efficient, your wafers will heat up faster than you’re used to. You’ll want to tweak your PID controllers so you don’t accidentally overshoot your temperature.
Keeping things clean
Since these live in a clean room, we’ve stripped out any materials that could cause outgassing. We can’t have contaminants ruining your wafers. We also seal the gold layer so it doesn’t oxidize. Just be careful with them. If the coating gets scratched or some oil gets on there, you’ll start seeing uneven heat patterns across the wafer. Keep them clean. And please, only use approved solvents. You don’t want to accidentally strip the gold film off.
