
Why We’re Swapping Ovens for IR in the Fab

The old convection ovens? They’re just too slow. They spend half their time heating up the air around the wafer, which is basically just throwing money and electricity into the void. Getting the heat where it actually matters
Here’s the thing about IR: it doesn’t bother with the air. It sends electromagnetic radiation straight into the coating or adhesive. It’s a direct hit. Instead of waiting hours for a part to soak in a hot box, the chemical reaction happens in seconds. It’s fast. Really fast. And that changes everything for your energy bill and your timeline.
The struggle with “Lead-Free”
Switching to lead-free solder and adhesives isn’t as simple as swapping a bottle. These materials are pickier. They need higher temperatures and a much tighter thermal profile. If your heat is uneven, you’re looking at voids or delamination. That’s a nightmare. With IR lamps, we can actually tune the wavelength to match exactly what the material wants to absorb. Plus, there are no combustion gases or weird emissions leaking into your space. Your clean room stays clean, and your parts actually come out right.
The catch (and how to handle it)
Now, IR is powerful, but you can’t just crank it to eleven. If you hit a part with too much wattage too quickly, you get “skinning.” The top layer cures instantly, trapping solvents underneath. Even worse, you might warp the substrate. The trick is the ramp-up. We usually set up a staged heating profile. It’s a bit of a balancing act between moving parts through the line and making sure they don’t buckle under the pressure. But the payoff is huge. You can ditch those massive, clunky ovens for compact IR tunnels. When you reclaim that floor space in a fab, it’s like finding free real estate. You can finally fit in those extra processing tools you’ve been eyeing.
