Ever stepped out of a shower into a locker room that feels like a walk-in freezer? It’s the worst. Most of those places rely on standard heaters that try to warm up the air. But in a drafty room with doors opening and closing, that warm air just vanishes. You’re left shivering while the heater fights a losing battle against the breeze. We do things differently. We use shortwave infrared (SWIR). Instead of wasting time trying to heat the entire room, these wall-mounted units beam heat directly onto your skin and clothes. The Secret to That “Instant” Warmth
Here is the thing: shortwave IR doesn’t care about the air temperature. It moves in waves. When you stand in front of one, the energy is absorbed by your body, not the oxygen floating around you. That’s why it works in seconds. You don’t have to wait for a central HVAC system to wake up and decide it’s cold. You just turn it on and stop shivering.
What’s Under the Hood
We build these with high-wattage quartz elements. Since they live in bathrooms, we make sure the internals are tightly sealed. Steam is a killer for electronics, so we keep the moisture out. We also add a reflective aluminum backing. This pushes all that heat forward toward the person, rather than letting the wall soak it up. But we have to be careful with the power. If the wattage is too high for a small space, you get “hotspots”—those annoying areas where it feels like you’re standing too close to a campfire. We calibrate the output so it feels like a steady, comfortable glow when you’re standing about 5 or 6 feet away.
The Practical Stuff
If you’re installing these, keep in mind they need their own dedicated circuits. They pull a fair amount of power when they first kick on, so your breakers need to be ready for that initial surge. There is one catch, though: line-of-sight. Since the heat travels in a straight line, anything in the way—like a tall locker or a curtain—creates a cold spot. You can’t hide these behind partitions. The trick is to mount them high on the wall and angle them down. That way, the warmth covers as much ground as possible.
