
Stop Baking Your Equipment: A Smarter Way to Dry MEMS Wafers
When you’re drying MEMS sensor wafers, you want the moisture gone. Period. But the problem is that most people try to do this by heating up everything in sight. Standard convection or omnidirectional heating basically turns your expensive semiconductor tool into a giant oven. The interior walls soak up all that heat, which is a nightmare. You end up with “hot walls” that can burn an operator or warp your internal seals. It’s a mess. We found a better way:directional infrared (IR) heating.
How it actually works
Think of it like a flashlight, but with heat. Instead of warming up the air and hoping the wafer gets hot, IR lamps shoot electromagnetic radiation straight at the wafer surface. By picking the right wavelengths—usually short or medium-wave—the energy hits the wafer and the liquid residue and stops there. It doesn’t wander off to heat up the rest of the chassis. We use quartz envelopes and reflectors to keep that beam tight and focused. The heat goes exactly where it’s needed and nowhere else.
The tricky part (The trade-offs)
Now, here’s the catch. To get those wafers dry fast, you need a lot of power in a very small space. High thermal density is great for speeding up your cycle, but it comes with a price. Those high-wattage lamps getinsanely hotat the terminals. If you just plug them in without checking if your wiring and connectors can handle the actual current draw, you’re going to melt your sockets. It’s a common mistake. Even though the beam is directional, you still need to position your cooling fans to pull heat away from the ends of the lamps. Don’t skip that part.
A safer floor for your team
The best part? You get rid of that “oven effect” inside the chamber. Since the walls aren’t absorbing waste heat, the outside of the machine stays cool to the touch. You don’t have to bolt on bulky thermal shielding or worry about your techs getting scorched when they reach inside for maintenance. It’s a simple shift in thinking. Stop heating the whole room. Just heat the part.
